When dinner is served with cloth napkins, people sit up a little straighter, linger a little longer, become more present in the moment. It's a visual and tactile reminder that this experience matters. I don't know how many times I have hosted friends for dinner at our house and when the cloth napkins come out, the "oh my, how fancy" chorus begins. It's not fancy. It's just good living. Don't believe me? I have witnessed it happen with a bunch of teenage boys over a large box of pizza. Proof is in the pudding (or pizza). It's a powerfully good feeling and one that is so simple to do. Really.
